Townhill food bank, the first for the area, was set up and funded in April by the Local People Project. The team of volunteers are currently helping hundreds of people from Townhill, Mayhill & Gors with emergency supplies weekly.

“With many people finding themselves in times of hardship due to no fault of their own, we had to do something to help. Unfortunately, unemployment rates have soared and Universal Credit payments can take up to 7 weeks after applying. That’s a long time with no income coming in and we don’t want to see anyone in our community ever go without food”, says Leanne Dower.

Each Wednesday the team deliver emergency parcels to members of the community and the Lord Mayor wanted to visit the centre personally to thank the team for their efforts and show support for this vital service.

The centre welcomes donations of food, toiletries and other essential items that will help those who are in need of extra help and support during this time.

If anyone finds themselves in a position where they need emergency food supplies they can call the Phoenix Centre on a Monday or Tuesday on 01792 478900.

We would like to thank the Welsh government and WcVa for funding this vital service to our community and making this possible.

The Phoenix Centre staff and members of the Local People Project ‘walk all over cancer’ and raise over £1000 for Elle Dennis.

Elle Dennis from Townhill is just 21 and has just finished her chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with Leukaemia in November last year.

All staff at the Phoenix and members of our community wanted to do something to support Elle and her family at this difficult time.

The team of 27 committed to walking 10,000 steps every day throughout March. The target was set and by the 31st March they should have completed a staggering 7 million steps.

We’re over the moon to announce that they smashed the target and ended up walking just under 10 million steps!

The team walked a staggering total of 9,887,806 steps, even with current lockdown conditions.

Leanne Dower, centre manager, kickstarted the campaign and has been the driving force behind the challenge. Leanne has been keeping everyone on track by tallying up everyone’s steps on a master sheet at the Phoenix.

The community have been able to keep up to date with everyone’s progress on the notice board and sponsor the team or support by donating onsite or online.

“We wanted to do something to support Elle and her family at this difficult time.

The commitment and dedication shown from everyone who took part has been outstanding”

“Even with the current lockdown situation, we were all determined to finish and achieve the target and raise lots of cash for a courageous lady in our community. Thank you to everyone who took part and those who donated”, says Leanne.
